Last week we looked at how a child’s brain develops, and how even adult behaviour is influenced by the emotional part of the brain, the limbic system.
So this week we look at how to help a child to recognise and manage their emotions by teaching them about emotions. Over time, this empowers the logical part of their brain to calm themselves down. There are many pages of example emotion images in the Real Parenting Workbook which is handed out to parents at the beginning of the course. They can use these to help them teach younger children about emotions.
In the second half of week two we’ll look at encouraging the behaviour we want using praise that is specific and positive.
Below is a quick questionnaire to help you check your understanding of the topics covered.
